A Day At The Zoo

On Friday Anders took a day off work so we could go out gallivanting. As the weather is still not brilliant here, we were stuck for places to visit until I suggested the zoo. Just the mere thought of going without Little L made us both feel guilty. Then I thought it must be at least 25 years since I'd been to a zoo without a child. The idea of walking at our own pace, no checking for the child every few seconds, no toilet hunts, no cries of 'I'm hungry/thirsty', that was it ... my guilt had disappeared.

We arrived not long after Chester Zoo had opened and although the car park already looked very busy, walking about it seemed quite empty compared to weekends or the school holidays. I even managed to get a snaps of animals that are usually so crowded with people I never get to see them.

One of the places I try to head to first is the bat cave which is home to two bat species. One of the keepers was constructing a cage while we were there ready for their annual bat count. She estimated that they have around 400 bats. I could quite happily stand in there all day (once I'd got used to the smell).

Flamingos are another animal that I always head to. I don't know what it is about these that attracts me. Its certainly not the colour pink, maybe they remind me of Alice In Wonderland.

One of the new additions to the zoo since our last visit was The Islands where we saw this warty pig named Elvis who appears to be sporting the same hairstyle as my youngest boy. From what his keeper was telling us he seems to be quite a character.

Another one of the zoo exhibits we visited was the Tropical Realm.

Home to amphibians and reptiles, it is also a free flight aviary. The birds are not bothered by humans in the slightest and will hang around along enough for a quick photo.

Some of the animals that I don't think we've seen before were the rock hyrax which are actually related to the elephant. They have hooves instead of claws. I loved the facial expression on this little chap.

My husbands favourites were these painted dogs. Lovely colours and coat patterns. He ended up buying Little L a plush one before we came home.

The aardvarks were adorable. There were three, all cuddled together having a snooze. Their long tongues flicking out as they slept.

We had a brilliant day, a bit cold but at least it didn't rain. It turned out that Little L wasn't bothered in the slightest that we went without her. She said ' Oh OK, as long as you didn't go paddling at the seaside without me '. Not a chance in this weather.

Chester Mid Summer Watch Parade

After seeing the Mid Summer Watch Parade last year by chance we visited Chester yesterday especially to watch the parade again. We almost didn't make it on time as on the way we got stuck behind a heavy load vehicle which added 45 minutes to the journey but we managed to arrive just as it was beginning.

Little L still wasn't too keen on the green men or any of the other large puppets and kept hiding behind us when she knew one was getting close. There were lots of people watching again and I just wonder how busy it gets when the parade is on the Saturday. We had a good day out and the rain even stayed away until we got back home.

Grosvenor Museum

On Sunday we spend the day in Chester visiting the Grosvenor Museum. We did bring Little L here for the first time last year and it was a bit of a gamble as to whether she would find it boring or not but she really enjoyed it. For children, there are worksheets to fill in as they walk around plus interactive parts on some displays.

Little L's favourite exhibition in the museum is the Natural History Collection. There is a table laid out with animal stencils, paper and crayons in this room as well as magnifying equipment, Little L could quite happily stay in this part all day.

Adjoining the museum building is the Period House. The house its self dates from around 1680 ( the floorboards do feel slightly higgledy piggledy and a bit bouncy ). Each room has a display depicting social history from different eras.

The displays in the house which I tend to linger around the longest are the 1925 Day Nursery and the collection of household items and fashion dating from 1920's to 1960's.

The period house also has things to keep children interested such as I Spy books, boxes containing objects to feel and different scents to guess.
Little L loved her time at the museum and asked if we can find one with dinosaurs in. At the moment she is learning about dinosaurs at school and wants to see how big a real life dinosaur skeleton is.

Chester Mid Summer Watch Parade

Yesterday on a day out to Chester we were fortunate to witness something rather unexpected, the Chester's Mid Summer Watch Parade. It was unexpected to us at least and not to the many people who had turned up especially to watch the event. Our trip was to buy a dressing up costume and school socks for Little L and then while we were going to take her to the museum. Just after lunch time I popped into Tescos for something to feed my hungry lot on then went to find a spot to sit. We went walked through a part we had never been before and noticed some people walking on and off a field wearing costumes and face paint. I thought maybe there was a Summer Fair or festival taking place so I took some steps leading to one of the walls for better look. The field was full of people in groups wearing a variety of costumes, devils, green men, crows, suns, fish. Luckily I had my camera because we were meant to be going to the museum. I would have kicked myself if I didn't have it with me with all this going on.

We must have watched them getting ready ( what for I didn't know at this point )for about half an hour. Plenty of other people had gathered by this point so I wasn't they only nosey one around. When they began the exit the field Little L wanted to know what they were doing and I said we could follow them. Little L had never seen a parade before so it was really exciting for her. One of the ladies who was in the group of suns asked Little L if she wanted to join them which I thought of very nice of her but Little L was too shy. She was fascinated by the green men but when one came near to her to shake her hand, she squealed and backed into a hedge. I think she liked them but at a distance. The town centre was very busy by now but we managed to find a good spot to watch the parade.

We had a fantastic day and will go especially for the event next year. When we got home I looked into this parade ( I love the internet for this kind of thing ) and they also have one in Winter. This link gives some more history about the parade.
